Portable defibrillators (AEDs) based at New Zealand King Salmon’s Marlborough salmon farms are being made available to the public for medical emergencies.
The AEDs are primarily to be used for the safety of company divers.
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.
The defibrillators were on site ready to be used in a recent diver evacuation drill that was held in atrocious weather at Te Pangu Bay salmon farm in the Tory Channel and involved the local coastguard and St John Ambulance, along with Triple One Care – our first aid trainers.
The aims of the drill were to extend the reach of the drill to include an evacuation of the casualty with the emergency services, to test the systems of all parties involved and implement any learning from the exercise.
As part of the drill, staff were advised by St Johns on how and when to use the AED devices.

The AEDs are easy to use and there is one on each of four farms – Ruakaka, Clay Point, Te Pangu, and Waihinau. They, along with first aid facilities, are available to the public in the event of an emergency.
