After 34 years of dedicated service, one of New Zealand King Salmon’s most familiar and respected faces has hung up his boots.
Ian “Blue” Walker at his home in Southbridge
Ian Walker, known to everyone as “Blue”, joined the company in November 1991 as employee number nine – long before NZKS had grown into the business it is today. What followed was a lifetime of contribution, connection, and quiet leadership.
From the very beginning, Blue found his place outdoors – sleeves rolled up, getting stuck in, and never one to shy away from hard work. Over the years, he turned his hand to just about every task in freshwater aquaculture. From hand feeding and cleaning raceways to broodstock management, spawning, transport, and everything in between – Blue is a true jack of all trades, and someone the team could rely on no matter the task.
His role took him across the South Island, from the early days in Rakiura Stewart Island through to operations in the Marlborough Sounds. Wherever he went, Blue brought the same dedicated approach – giving it 100 percent, taking pride in his work, and supporting those around him.

His positive attitude and dedication have not gone unnoticed. Over three decades, Blue has built a reputation as someone who is conscientious, positive, and deeply committed to his role, his team, and the wider community. Through both his work and the practical craftsmanship he brought to the site, he has left a lasting imprint on Tentburn and on the many people who have worked alongside him.
But it is perhaps outside the day-to-day operations that his legacy is most strongly felt.
Recognising an opportunity with leftover unhatched salmon eggs, Blue helped establish an education programme with local schools in partnership with Fish & Game. What started as a simple idea grew into something much bigger and went on to give generations of students hands-on experience with the King salmon lifecycle.
Blue volunteered his time to set up and run the programme, helping children hatch eggs, learn salmon biology, and understand the care required to raise salmon before their release into the Rakaia River. Over the years, those connections have extended beyond the classroom, and he has celebrated milestones with families, stayed in touch across generations, and kept every handwritten thank you note from the children he inspired.
For many, those early experiences left a lasting impression – something Blue remains quietly proud of.
In his 34 years, Blue has seen significant changes across the business. He started in a time of largely manual operations, where much of the day was spent hand feeding fish, and has witnessed the transition to automated systems and modern, purpose-built facilities. Through it all, one thing remained constant: his genuine enjoyment of the work.
What began as a chance opportunity became something much more – nearly half a lifetime spent doing a job he loved, alongside teammates he considers friends.
Blue is deeply respected by his colleagues and will be sorely missed. In the local community, he is something of a legend; “everyone knows Blue”. A reflection of both his character and the relationships he has built over time.
His recent send-off, surrounded by teammates, family, and friends, was a fitting tribute to a career defined by dedication and connection.

So, what does retirement look like?
Not, it seems, like slowing down. Blue is looking forward to spending more time doing what he loves – recreational fishing, tending his garden, cycling regularly, and continuing to stay connected to his community.
And while he may no longer be part of the day-to-day team, it’s safe to say he will always be part of the fabric of NZKS. Blue plans to remain a familiar face around the Tentburn site, catching up with former teammates and continuing to care for the gardens that have long reflected his pride in the workplace and passion for the outdoors.
A trusted colleague and a lasting influence on those who have had the privilege to work alongside him, Blue leaves behind a remarkable legacy built over 34 years of outstanding service.
We thank Blue for everything he has given – to the company, to his team, and to the wider community.
