One of the joys of cleaning up our Marlborough Sounds beaches is that you never know what you’ll find – such as the old classic message in a bottle.
This is what Karen Mant, New Zealand King Salmon Environmental Coordinator, stumbled across during one of our recent regular beach cleans at Forsyth Bay.
As part of our NZKS Solid Waste Management Plan, and under a wider Marine Farmers Association (MFA) programme, every quarter each salmon farm carries out these beach clean-ups which ensures our beautiful Marlborough Sounds environment remains pristine.
Findings of rubbish and debris are reported to the MFA.
Karen found the Montheith’s beer bottle, sporting a home brew cap, buried in the grassy bank rather than on top of the beach, which she believes suggests it had been there for some time.
Inside was an unnamed, undated note declaring the clearly young writer to be a fan of chocolate and suggesting that it is healthy for you.
The amusing find was a highlight of the last clean-up: Who knows what we will find at the next one.
