To keep up with demand and to ensure the highest quality salmon, we harvest five days a week all year round. The salmon are then transported in chilled conditions from our farms in the Marlborough Sounds over the hill to our Nelson processing plant, before being dispatched to customers all over the world.
In the past year we have been working on improving our quality even further by transporting the salmon in ‘bulk tankers’. The bulk tankers are a brand new technology for our company, based on best practice in the international salmon industry, and designed to deliver a consistent temperature to keep the salmon chilled for optimum taste and texture. Each tanker travels out to the farm on a barge where the salmon are pumped into the tanker with an ice slurry, immediately after harvest. The barge then returns the tanker to Picton or Havelock before travelling to Nelson where our fresh and smoked salmon factories are based.
As part of the project, we have also developed a special design for the outside of our bulk tankers. The first tanker design is inspired by the region where we grow our salmon – Marlborough – and the many international markets that we proudly deliver to. We are proud of the fact that some of the most discerning chefs and consumers around the world think our Marlborough King Salmon is the best salmon available worldwide.
Look out for our freshly branded bulk tanker on the road in the Top of the South, and even out in the Sounds.
