Two of our new salmon farms in Pelorus Sound are being opened in July; Waitata Bay farm and the newly named ‘Kopāua’ farm in Richmond Bay. These two farms add to the operating farms we have in Queen Charlotte Sound – Ruakaka, Otanerau, Te Pangu, Ngamahau and Clay Point.
The name Kopāua was suggested by local iwi and is the historic name for Richmond Bay.
Kopāua farm was towed into place and secured in late April, including the newly refurbished Kaiwaka barge that was designed in-house and constructed by local suppliers and our aqua engineering team.
As part of our resource consents for Waitata Bay and Kopāua, a Tangata Whenua Advisory Panel has been established to assist NZ King Salmon on matters of importance to the iwi in the exercise of their kaitiakitanga. This panel and is made up of representatives from Ngāti Kuia and Ngāti Kōata.
The opening in July will include a blessing by local iwi, and feature representatives from central and local government.
