Handled with Care

Nothing is left to Chance

New Zealand King Salmon is at the leading edge of salmon livestock research, technology, husbandry and processing science, ensuring the optimum health, size, colour, oil content and quality of its salmon.

There is a constant effort to improve production, efficiency, marketing and product quality with selective breeding, better feeds and feeding methods, considerable investment in technology such as predator nets and algae monitoring, and the traceability of products resulting from good quality systems throughout all facets of the operation.

Handled with Care

Fish do not respond well to being handled and during their lives in the hatcheries and sea farms, handling is kept to a minimum. Harvesting techniques are humane, using a unique harvesting process incorporating an anaesthetic, which was developed in New Zealand.  This is to avoid handling stress and damage and ensure a high quality, consistent product. (Refer to report from British Humane Society).

Prepared with Care

Innovative farming techniques mean that salmon of consistently even size can be harvested all year round. Harvesting occurs at the Marlborough Sounds sea farms every week of the year from Sunday to Thursday, providing a continuous supply to the market. Each fish is then bled, packed in an ice slurry and transported directly to one of the four processing facilities in Nelson. Here, the fish is prepared quickly through highly controlled processes, allowing delivery of fresh, chilled and processed salmon to international markets within 48 hours of harvest.

New Zealand King Salmon processes approximately 8,500 tonnes of salmon per year, making it one of the largest global producers of farmed King salmon.

The best. Nothing less

New Zealand King Salmon puts a strong emphasis on high quality and professional standards in research, husbandry and environmental monitoring, processing, food safety and management. The totally integrated operations of the company allow monitoring control and flexibility at all stages, ensuring that premium quality salmon can be delivered reliably all year round to meet the market requirements.
