The New Zealand King Salmon Company Limited was formed in 1996 with the privatisation and merger of New Zealand’s two largest salmon companies, Southern Ocean Seafood Ltd and Regal Salmon Ltd. The Company is owned by Evergreen Holdings Ltd (51%), and Direct Capital (42%).
The company currently owns seven sea farm sites, of which five are active at any one time, all located in the remote, clean waters of the Marlborough Sounds. The company also owns three hatcheries for smolt rearing and four purpose built processing facilities in Nelson. The company Head Office in Nelson manages Administration and Sales & Marketing, while a New Zealand sales office in Auckland manages the New Zealand market.
The New Zealand King Salmon Co Ltd has four divisions under the Chief Executive:
Aquaculture, which includes research and development, salmon rearing, sea farming and harvesting. Almost a third of our staff are involved in Aquaculture production. Processing, including primary and value added processing. Over half of our staff are employed in this division which comprises four manufacturing units. Sales & Marketing, including both domestic and international sales and market servicing, distribution and product development. Corporate Services, including Finance, Human Resources, Business Systems and Accounting.
The New Zealand market is growing fast, taking around one half of production. Japan and Australia are the largest export markets taking 32% of production. A further 12% goes to North America with the balance going to South East Asia and the rest of the world. Salmon is processed for delivery in a variety of forms including fresh, frozen, smoked, and gravlax.
The company has three leading retail brands: Regal, Seasmoke and Southern Ocean.
To guarantee quality and reliability we must own and control every single stage of production with demonstrated traceability. The company is totally integrated and has full management of production and quality from the hatchery through to the market. Such control is our customer’s reassurance of the quality, reliability and dependability of our New Zealand King Salmon.
